Sand and Dust Test Chamber

2026.09.12 17:35:07

This 23-second video introduces the DERUI DR-IPX56-216L sand and dust test chamber, a 600×600×600 mm working-chamber tester that reproduces dust-laden air flow to evaluate how the seals and enclosures of electrical and electronic products, automotive and motorcycle parts resist the ingress of airborne particles. Dust is drawn from a conical hopper at the bottom of the chamber, delivered to the top of the inner box and then falls freely from top to bottom, creating a continuous and repetitive cycle that simulates open sand and dust environments caused by natural conditions or by artificially disturbed air flow such as vehicle movement.

What This Sand and Dust Video Shows

Working chamber and dust circulation

  • Working chamber 600×600×600 mm (W×D×H); outer cabinet approx. 1100×750×1645 mm

  • A conical hopper with a dust collection port at the bottom, where the suction inlet of the circulation fan is installed

  • Extracted dust is delivered to the top of the inner box and falls freely from top to bottom — a continuous, repetitive cycle

  • Top-down dust blowing mode with a closed-type alloy low-noise motor and multi-blade centrifugal fan

Dust, air flow and control parameters

  • Fine dust below 75 µm; coarse dust below 150 µm

  • Air flow meter 1–20 L/min; vacuum system with pressure regulating valve, suction nozzle, pressure regulating three-piece set, connecting pipe and vacuum pump

  • Load capacity 10 kg; observation window and lighting lamp, 1 pc each

  • C/S test piece power socket — dust-proof socket, AC 220 V 16 A, for specimens that must operate during the test

How a Sand and Dust Test Works

Step 1 - Load the specimen

Place the test specimen inside the working chamber (load capacity 10 kg). Components that must operate during the test are connected to the dust-proof C/S test piece power socket (AC 220 V 16 A).

Step 2 - Set the parameters

On the PLC touch screen, set the dust blowing time (stop/blow), the cycle period, the test time and, where required, the negative pressure difference. Dust blowing time, vibration time, cycle and vacuum time are adjustable from 1 s to 99 h.

Step 3 - Run the dust cycle

Dust is drawn from the hopper at the bottom and delivered to the top of the inner box, then falls freely from top to bottom — a continuous, repetitive cycle at a concentration of 2 kg/m³ and an airflow velocity of not more than 2 m/s, with the dust optionally heated to RT+10 °C–60 °C.

Step 4 - Inspect and verify

After the test, examine the specimen for particle ingress, then evaluate the result against the requirement of the invoked standard, dust grade and acceptance criteria.

Interpretation note: The chamber reproduces the dust and air flow conditions; it does not certify a product by itself. Compare results only when the same standard edition, dust grade, dust concentration, air flow and mounting arrangement are used.

Where Sand and Dust Testing Is Used

  • Electrical and electronic products — seals and enclosures are checked for the ingress of air-borne particles under sand and dust conditions.

  • Automotive and motorcycle parts — components that meet dust-laden air flow during operation, storage and transportation are verified against the required protection level.

  • Seals and sealed assemblies — the test is designed for preventing sand and dust from entering seals and enclosures, and for verifying their performance in use, storage and transportation.

  • Verification of particle effects — the purpose of the test is to determine the potential harmful effects of particles carried by air flow on electrical products.

Design Principle of the Dust Circulation

A conical hopper is designed with a dust collection port at the bottom. The suction inlet of a high-pressure turbine circulation fan is installed at the dust extraction port at the bottom end of the chamber. The extracted dust is delivered to the top of the inner box and then falls freely from top to bottom, which initiates a continuous and repetitive cycle.

The chamber is composed of the sand and dust test chamber, dust suction port, circulating dust blowing device, vacuum extraction system, flow valve, heating system and protective screen mesh. The chamber is fitted with an observation window and an internal lighting lamp for monitoring the test.

Standards and Test-Plan Compatibility

  • GB/T 2423.37 — La2

  • IEC 60068-2-68 — La2

  • ISO 20653 — La2

  • GB 4208-93 — 12.4

  • IEC 60529 — Clause 13.4: test requirements for the enclosure protection rating of household electrical appliances, low-voltage electrical appliances, automobiles and motorcycle parts

The DR-IPX56-216L is designed for the sand and dust test methods listed above, as stated in the product datasheet. Equipment capability alone does not prove compliance with every standard. Confirm the applicable edition and procedure, then verify performance with your actual specimen, dust grade, mounting arrangement and acceptance criteria.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the DR-IPX56-216L test?

It performs the sand and dust test: a dust-laden air flow is circulated inside the working chamber to evaluate how the seals and enclosures of electrical and electronic products, automotive and motorcycle parts resist the ingress of particles, and to determine the potential harmful effects of particles carried by air flow.

Which standards is it designed for?

Per the product datasheet: GB/T 2423.37 La2, IEC 60068-2-68 La2, ISO 20653 La2, GB 4208-93 12.4, and the test requirements for enclosure protection rating specified in IEC 60529 Clause 13.4.

Does it support negative pressure (under-pressure) testing?

Yes. The negative pressure difference range is −10–0 kPa and is adjustable and settable; the air pressure can be freely set at −2 kPa, −5 kPa and −10 kPa. The vacuum system includes a pressure regulating valve, suction nozzle, pressure regulating three-piece set, connecting pipe and vacuum pump.

Yes. A dust-proof C/S test piece power socket, AC 220 V 16 A, is provided inside the chamber so that the specimen can operate during the dust test. Confirm your specimen's supply requirement when ordering.

What dust and concentration are used?

Talcum powder is used as the test dust: fine dust below 75 µm and coarse dust below 150 µm, at a dust concentration of 2 kg/m³ and a talcum powder dosage of 2–5 kg/m³. The metal mesh has a wire diameter of 50 µm with a nominal wire spacing below 75 µm or 150 µm.

What power supply and site conditions are required?

AC 380 V, 3-phase 5-wire system, 50 Hz, with a separate 32 A air switch equipped with wiring terminals and a power cable cross-sectional area of at least 4 mm². Power consumption is 3 kW (no-load). The site should be held at (23±5) °C, 25%–70% RH and 86–106 kPa.

Video Summary
