2.5D Video Measuring Machine

2026.09.15 18:55:08

This short video presents the DERUI 2.5D video measuring machine — an optical image measuring instrument of the 2.5D + probe type, filmed in the Guangdong Derui showroom with its operator workstation beside it. While the presenter walks through the machine, one selection point is raised that is easy to miss when quotations are compared side by side: the machine table itself. In the video the presenter points out that a cast iron machine table is subject to deformation after about two years of use, and explains why the table matters — it is part of the reference that every measurement on that instrument is compared against.

What This 2.5D Video Measuring Machine Shows

The machine structure

  • The column, the base and the moving worktable are all granite parts, selected for dimensional stability over time

  • The Z axis uses a parallel linear guide structure with a servo motor drive and a brake design

  • The instrument is semi-automatic: the X and Y axes are positioned by hand for quick setup, while the Z axis is servo driven for automatic focusing and height measurement

The machine table

  • In the video the presenter points out that a cast iron machine table is subject to deformation after about two years of use

  • The machine table is part of the reference system that every measurement on the instrument is compared against

  • The machine shown in the video is built on a granite worktable instead

The workstation and the software

  • The DR-3D CNC measurement software runs on the workstation beside the machine

  • Edges are collected from the magnified image, elements are constructed from them, and the results are exported as the inspection record

  • Measurement data can be exported to Excel and PDF, with bidirectional import and export with CAD

How a 2.5D Measurement Is Taken

Step 1 - Position the part

The part is placed on the moving worktable (load capacity 50 kg) and positioned on the glass plate under the zoom lens. A joystick with X, Y and Z axis lock is used to bring the feature of interest under the camera.

Step 2 - Set magnification and lighting

The automatic zoom lens is set to the magnification the feature needs, and the contour and surface LED rings are adjusted so that the edge under inspection is defined the same way at every repeat measurement.

Step 3 - Measure the planar features

In the DR-3D CNC software, edges are collected by click, crosshair edge-finding or automatic capture. Points, lines, circles, arcs, ellipses, rectangles and slots are measured directly, and distances, angles and flatness are constructed from them.

Step 4 - Switch to the probe

For features the camera cannot resolve, the probe touches the surface and the software fits the collected points into three-dimensional elements, so form-and-position tolerances can be evaluated as well as planar dimensions.

Interpretation note: a measuring instrument reports coordinates and dimensions; it does not certify a part or a product by itself. Compare measurement results only when the same magnification, lighting setting, part orientation and reference system are used.

Where This Instrument Is Used

  • Precision electronics, connectors, stamped and machined parts, tools and moulds

  • Plastic, rubber and other soft or easily deformed parts that should not be touched during inspection

  • Small-batch incoming inspection and first-article approval, where one setup has to cover both planar and three-dimensional features

  • 2D reverse engineering, contour scanning and drawing comparison

Why the Machine Table Material Matters

An image measuring instrument compares a magnified image of a part against a coordinate system. That system is defined by the machine itself, and the parts that define it are the column, the base and the moving worktable. If any of them changes shape, the comparison changes with it — without any error message on screen.

That is the point raised in the video. For an instrument that is expected to hold its accuracy over years of daily inspection, the material of the machine table decides how stable that reference stays over the life of the machine.

Optical Measurement and Contact Measurement

  • Optical, non-contact — a zoom lens and an industrial camera capture the edges of the part without touching it, which suits soft or easily deformed workpieces such as plastic and rubber components and PCB boards

  • Optical, planar dimensions — length, diameter and angle are measured from the image, and distances, angles and flatness are constructed from the collected elements

  • Probe, contact — fully smooth surfaces, mirror finishes, the inner walls of deep holes and threads do not present a usable edge to the camera, so the probe touches the feature instead

  • Probe, three-dimensional features — the collected points are fitted into planes, cylinders and cones, so tolerances such as perpendicularity and cylindricity can be evaluated as well as planar dimensions

Information Required for a Quotation

  • The part envelope and mass, including the fixture, against the 50 kg load capacity of the worktable

  • The smallest feature you need to measure, which sets the magnification and the field of view

  • The tolerances to be verified, and whether any features must be touched rather than viewed

  • The report format your quality system requires, and whether SPC data has to be archived with the inspection report

  • Your site power supply, the quantity required and the destination country

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the video talk about a cast iron machine table?

Because the machine table is part of the reference system that every measurement is compared against, and a cast iron table is subject to deformation over time. On this machine the column, the base and the moving worktable are granite parts, selected for dimensional stability over time.

What can it measure that an optical-only instrument cannot?

Features that do not present a usable edge to the camera — fully smooth surfaces, mirror finishes, the inner walls of deep holes and threads. The probe touches those features, and the software fits the points into three-dimensional elements, so tolerances such as perpendicularity and cylindricity can be evaluated as well as planar dimensions.

How accurate is it?

The published repeatability accuracy for this series is ≤ 3 µm on a 0.0005 mm grating scale, with optical magnification from 0.7 to 4.5X and image magnification up to 256X. These are machine specifications; the uncertainty of an actual inspection result also depends on the feature being measured, the fixture and the room environment.

Which models are available?

DR-3020CNC-3T, DR-4030CNC-3T, DR-5040CNC-3T and DR-6050CNC-3T, with measuring ranges from 300×200×200 mm to 500×400×200 mm (X×Y×Z) and a load capacity of 50 kg. Confirm the range against the largest part you plan to measure.

Video Summary

This short English-language video presents the DERUI 2.5D video measuring machine in the showroom, together with the software workstation used to measure with it. The presenter raises the machine table as a selection point — a cast iron table is subject to deformation over time, while the column, base and moving worktable of this machine are granite parts. Around that point the video covers the optical system that measures planar dimensions without touching the part, and the contact probe that takes over where optics cannot resolve a feature.
